It is with a heavy heart that I inform all family and friends of the passing of Joe K. Elrod at his family home in Canyon Lake, TX.
Joe passed away on Sunday, March 30, 2025 suddenly (heart attack) in our home in Canyon Lake, Texas. I am at peace right now because we lived a good full life and were married for 52 years. We approached life as an adventure and made the most of it!!
Joe Kenneth Elrod was born on February 24, 1950 in Dallas, Texas at St. Paul Hospital. His parents were Joe Emory Elrod and Mildred Mary Giesen Elrod who resided in Arlington, TX at the time.
Joe married Ramona Gene Uzzle on September 22, 1973 in Mesquite, Texas. He is survived by wife, Ramona and son, Jason Lee Elrod and wife Dana, of Pendleton, Oregon with three grandchildren, Brennan Lee Elrod of Granbury, TX, Olivia Jillian Elrod and Dillon Cale Elrod, Pendleton, OR and one GREAT granddaughter Hayslee Michelle Elrod. He had two sisters Mary Johnson (Dallas, TX) and Teresa Little (Frisco, TX), including two sisters-in-law, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and others adopted by heart.
Joe retired in 2012 from AURA, Inc., National Solar Observatory/Sac Peak, DST Solar Telescope in Sunspot, NM. as an observer/research technician. He assisted solar physicists/scientists from the United States and various other countries who performed solar research from the Dunn Solar Telescope (Tower) and Evans Solar Telescope (Big Dome) in Sunspot.
Joe spent quality time with members of his family and friends and enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, hiking, photographing family and friends in nature, He was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed watching his son and grandchildren play sports during their school years. He was the rock of our immediate family, but also extended family. He provided valuable advice and counseling to all family and friends if asked.
He was a member of the Lions Club and a volunteer firefighter in the Village of Cloudcroft, NM. He and Ramona left New Mexico and moved to Texas upon retirement. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his memory to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
Best big brother ever! He was the rock of our family. So many wonderful memories. I am missing him so much.
A life well lived is a precious gift
Of hope and strength and grace,
From someone who has made our world
A brighter, better place
It’s filled with moments, sweet and sad
With smiles and sometimes tears,
With friendships formed and good times shared
And laughter through the years.
A life well lived is a legacy
Of joy and pride and pleasure,
A living, lasting memory
Our grateful hearts will treasure
