Cary Lee Leverett, MD, Captain, USNR, received his final promotion, Thursday March 20, 2025, and is now stationed in his heavenly home with his loving Savior, after a five-year battle with Amyloidosis.

Cary Lee Leverett was born on a farm in Waurika, Oklahoma, December 05, 1936, to Edgar Joseph Leverett, Sr and Beatrice Elizabeth Estes Leverett. He was one of six siblings and had an amazing childhood. He became an Eagle Scout, and was awarded the God/Country medal as well as the Silver Award, Order of the Arrow Brotherhood. He was the President of his senior class at Ardmore High School. He attended Oklahoma Baptist University and was again his class president . In 1959 Cary was accepted to study medicine/surgery at the University of Oklahoma. He joined the US Navy medical program in 1962. During the Vietnam war he served his country as the Chief Surgeon aboard the USS Hornet (CV-8) Yorktown-Class Aircraft Carrier. From 1968-71 he returned to the University of Oklahoma where he completed his Urology Residency. Upon moving to Wichita Falls, Texas, he became a partner at Reagan Urology. He was a member of the American College of Surgeons and the American Urology Association.

In 1979 he married the love of his life and his best friend, Paula Ann Fugett, after surviving the 1979 tornado that devastated Wichita Falls. Cary and Paula relocated to New Braunfels, in 1980, setting up the first local Urology practice.

Cary was a sincere and humble follower of His Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. His love for Christ was most evident in his love and adoration of his wife, Paula Ann, for 45 years. His last words were “Oh Lala, I love you so much!” He truly loved her “as Christ Loves His Church”. Cary was blessed with seven children, each of whom he loved and cherished till the end of his life and all were able to visit him in his final days. Cary’s life was an adventure. To know him was to laugh, to hear incredible stories, and to learn from him something important every time you were near him.

Shortly after moving to New Braunfels and while jogging with Paula along Loop 337, Cary was struck by a rattlesnake. Through this ordeal and coming face to face with his mortality, Cary came to the realization that He had to return to the God of his parents and their love of Jesus Christ. He became a voracious reader of scripture. It wasn’t long before he was teaching Sunday School and leading Bible studies. He had a lot of catching up to do and from this time forward he didn’t waste a day pursuing his Heavenly Father. Cary was an involved member of the Springs Community Church where he continually dedicated himself to befriending and mentoring many.

Cary loved jogging. In October of 1985, he and a few good friends completed the NYC marathon and qualified for the Boston Marathon as well. While running was a passion for a time, Cary’s favorite activity outside was landscaping. All his kids were strongly encouraged to join him and Paula every Saturday in what he referred to as “fellowship”. This meant planting all kinds of flowers, building rock walls, and occasionally blacktopping a driveway. While there was a lot complaining at the time, these are now precious memories for all who ever were blessed to “fellowship” with Pa.

In 2000, Cary turned his entire professional focus to microscopic vasectomy reversals. This was Cary’s ministry, and people traveled from all over the world because of his incredible skill at this procedure. He loved to look at his wall of pictures, literally hundreds of reversal babies.

In 2010 Cary and Paula retired and began to travel. This included trips in the RV, cruises, and flights all over the world. Cary and Paula also took up golf leading Cary to his last official job as Marshal at Landa Park Golf Course, which was really just an excuse to hunt for golf balls. He and Paula were able to enjoy their retirement years with these many adventures with great friends and family.

If you spent any time with Cary, you were very familiar with the words, “Let me tell you a story”. After that followed some of the most interesting and colorful stories from an incredibly lived life. From growing up in Waurika, to taking leave from his ship in some foreign country while in the Navy, he was a master at weaving incredible tales. Many tears and much laughter has been shared recounting the stories that Cary told in only the way he could.

Cary’s life was a picture of God’s Grace and redemption. If you were ever looking for Cary, all you had to do was go to his study. Surrounded by all his books, he spent hours each day pouring over scripture and was happy to relay what God had revealed to him that day. He would often say “God gave beauty for ashes”. His greatest legacy was one of how the Lord can change one man’s heart. Cary was incredibly quick to forgive and when he did, it was done and never brought back up. In his explanation when asked he relayed, “I have been forgiven of so much, how can I not forgive”. That was Cary because of Christ. If you had the privilege of praying with Cary, you will remember “Abba, we just want to talk to you” at the beginning and “come quickly Lord Jesus” at the end.

Cary was preceded in death by his father, Edgar Joseph Leverett, Sr., his mother, Beatrice Elizabeth Estes Leverett, older siblings, Cora Letha Leverett Patton, Dorothy Leverett Collins, Eddie Jo Leverett Brown, and Edgar Joseph Leverett, Jr. He is survived by his younger sister, Elizabeth Leverett Miller.

Cary is survived by his wife, Paula Leverett, and children, Elaine Leverett Nelson (Scott), Laura Leverett Okruch (Doug), Edward Leverett (Liz), Tyler Leverett (Gina), Whitney Leverett Elrod (Cory), Luke Leverett, and Cary Elizabeth Leverett Wilson (Justin).

Cary is affectionately called “Pa” by his grandchildren Alex Nelson Baines (George), Riley Nelson Bratton (Reid), Allison Okruch Trader (Cole), Leverett Elrod, Sylvie Elrod, Emma Okruch, Grace Okruch, Carson Leverett, Keegan Leverett, Mallory Wilson, Kennedy Leverett, Bridger Elrod, Charlie Leverett, Willow Leverett-ONeal, Penn Leverett, Sander Wilson, Beck Leverett, Ranger Wilson, Gunner Wilson, and Archer Wilson, and great-grandchild, Scottie Baines, and Aurora Fisher. Also close to his heart, Dan and Jodi Cowan and 3 more “grands”, James, Claire and AJ.

There will be a private full military burial at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. The celebration of Dr. Leverett’s life will be held at Springs Community Church on April 11, 2025 at 1pm. Cary loved a party, so we will celebrate! Colorful attire is welcome and appreciated.
